Walk down any skincare aisle and you'll find ingredients promising everything from a “24-karat glow” to “cellular renewal.” Most of it is marketing dressed up as science. Some of it is genuine, well-evidenced dermatology.
But telling the two apart usually means reading a research paper, not a product label.
So we did that part for you.
This is a plain breakdown of which ingredients in men's skincare have clinical evidence behind them, and which ones are mostly there to sell a jar of cream. Some of what follows is in our own formulas. Some of it isn't - because not every trend deserves a place in a routine just because it's popular.
Here's what the research actually supports, and where we've landed as a result.

First, the ingredients that earn their place - and what they'll actually do for your skin.
A humectant that can hold many times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid pulls moisture into the outer layers of skin and helps it stay there. A 2022 review in Dermatologic Therapy showed consistent, clinically-measurable improvements in skin hydration and texture from applying topical hyaluronic acid across multiple studies.
It's one of the most consistently well-evidenced hydrating ingredients in dermatology, works across skin types, and is genuinely difficult to overuse.
It's the backbone of our HYDRATING DAILY MOISTURIZER, and a big part of why it leaves skin looking properly hydrated, not just temporarily coated.
Short chains of amino acids that signal skin cells to behave a certain way - in this case, to support collagen production.
Peptides like Matrixyl® work by mimicking fragments of collagen breakdown, which triggers your skin into thinking it needs to produce more. It's a genuinely evidence-backed mechanism, and it's part of why it's included in HYDRATING DAILY MOISTURIZER alongside hyaluronic acid - to give you firmer, smoother, more resilient skin.
A form of vitamin B3 with one of the strongest evidence bases of any skincare ingredient. A 2024 mechanistic review in Antioxidants confirmed that niacinamide meaningfully reduces oxidative stress, inflammation, and pigmentation, while supporting barrier function and regulating sebum production.
That’s a genuinely rare combination of benefits from a single, well-tolerated ingredient. It's not currently in our topical range, and we're not going to pretend otherwise - but we're working on it. So watch this space!
An alpha-hydroxy acid that gently dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells, supporting cell turnover without the scrubbing action of a physical exfoliant. Lactic acid specifically is one of the gentler AHAs available, which matters for skin that's prone to irritation from shaving, or darker skin that's prone to hyperpigmentation.

A genuine antioxidant with real evidence for reducing oxidative stress and supporting collagen synthesis, whether taken orally or applied topically in a stabilised form.

❌ Topical Collagen
The most common ingredient myth in skincare. Native collagen molecules are enormous - roughly 300,000 daltons - while your skin barrier generally only allows molecules under about 500 daltons to pass through. In plain terms: collagen applied in a cream cannot physically penetrate to where it would need to be to “rebuild” anything. It can still hydrate the surface, which is a real, if modest, benefit - it's just not doing what the label implies.
❌ Gold Flakes and 24-Karat Everything
Gold is chemically inert, which is precisely why it doesn't do anything meaningful to skin biology. It's decorative, and priced accordingly.
❌ Snail Mucin
There's some genuine evidence for mild hydrating and soothing properties, largely from the glycoproteins involved - but the clinical evidence base is thin compared to the hype, and nothing in it suggests snail mucin outperforms hyaluronic acid or niacinamide for the same jobs.
❌ Activated Charcoal
Marketed as “drawing out impurities,” but there's no meaningful clinical evidence it does this on skin the way it does in, say, water filtration. Any cleansing effect is more likely coming from the surfactants in the same product, not the charcoal.
❌ “Snake Venom” Peptide (Syn-Ake)
Marketed as a topical alternative to Botox because it's loosely modelled on a compound from Temple Viper venom. The reality is far less dramatic: the peptide itself hasn't shown anything close to Botox-level muscle relaxation in independent research, and most of the supporting studies come from the ingredient's own manufacturer rather than neutral third parties. Striking name, unremarkable results.
❌ “Paraben-Free” as a Selling Point
This one cuts the other way: it's not that a harmful ingredient is being hyped, it's that a safe one is being feared. A formal safety assessment published in the International Journal of Toxicology reviewed the available toxicological data and concluded that parabens are safe at the concentrations actually used in cosmetics - a conclusion shared by the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety. “Paraben-free” labelling is popular because it sounds reassuring, not because of a genuine safety gap that science has identified.
We didn't choose our formulas by chasing trends, and we didn't choose them by avoiding anything scary-sounding on principle either.
Every active ingredient across the system - hyaluronic acid and peptides in the moisturizer, lactic acid in the face wash, tea tree oil in the shave cream, collagen peptides, zinc, vitamin C, and probiotics across the supplements - is there because there's a real, traceable mechanism behind it, not because it tested well in a focus group.
That also means being honest when something well-evidenced, like niacinamide, isn't currently part of the range. Deliberate isn't the same as complete, and we'd rather you know the difference than assume we've covered every base.
It's a slower way to build a product range than chasing whatever's trending, but it's the only approach that holds up once you actually go looking for the research behind the claims - which, if you've read this far, you clearly don't mind doing.
How to Read a Label Like This Yourself
✅ Check the position, but don't over-read it.
Ingredient lists are ordered by concentration, by law, down to 1% - so the first several names genuinely tell you what a product mostly is.
Below that 1% threshold, though, brands can list ingredients in any order they like, regardless of how much of each is actually in the formula. Two ingredients sitting right next to each other near the bottom of a list could be present in very different amounts, and there's no way to tell from the label alone.
It also cuts the other way: a low position doesn't automatically mean an ingredient is useless.
Several genuinely effective actives - niacinamide, peptides, and a number of vitamins among them - work at concentrations well under 5%, so appearing lower on the list is often just accurate, not a red flag. Position is a useful clue. It's not a verdict.
✅ Be suspicious of single-ingredient hero claims.
Skin rarely responds dramatically to one input. Products built around a whole formulation approach tend to outperform ones leaning on a single buzzword ingredient.
✅ Separate “natural” from “evidenced.”
Natural and synthetic ingredients are both capable of working, and both capable of being irritating or inert. The origin of an ingredient says nothing about its efficacy on its own.
✅ When in doubt, search the ingredient name plus “clinical trial.”
It's a five-second habit that filters out most marketing noise fairly reliably.
Are natural ingredients always better than synthetic ones?
No. Effectiveness and safety depend on the specific ingredient and its concentration, not whether it's naturally derived. Many well-evidenced actives, including several on this list, are lab-synthesised for consistency and purity.
Why isn't niacinamide in any OTIS products yet?
It's a genuinely well-evidenced ingredient we simply haven't formulated with yet. We'd rather tell you that plainly than avoid mentioning it because it's not currently in our range. But we are working on including it soon.
Does a higher price always mean better ingredients?
Not necessarily. Price often reflects packaging, brand positioning, and marketing spend as much as formulation quality. The ingredient list and concentration matter more than the price tag.
How many active ingredients does a routine actually need?
Fewer than most routines suggest. A handful of well-evidenced actives, used consistently, generally outperforms a long list of ingredients used inconsistently or in competing combinations.
Can too many active ingredients actually hurt my skin?
Yes - layering multiple actives, especially exfoliants and potent antioxidants, can irritate the skin barrier rather than help it. More isn't automatically better.
Most of what's marketed as revolutionary in skincare is usually one of two things: genuinely untested, or well-established science wearing new packaging.
The ingredients that consistently hold up under real clinical scrutiny - hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, vitamin C, zinc, and a small handful of others - aren't exciting to read about. They're just the ones that actually do something good.
That's the standard we've built OTIS around: not what sounds impressive on a label, but what has a provable benefit for your skin.
