Ingredient Spotlight: Is Tea Tree Oil the Hero Ingredient for a Man’s Skin?

Posted by Otis Skincare on

Purifying Tea Tree Oil is a natural essential oil that comes from the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia plant.

Tea Tree Oil is well-known as an antiseptic with the ability to effectively treat wounds.

And it’s these anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits of Tea Tree Oil that make it an exceptional skincare ingredient for a man’s skin.

You can find Tea Tree Oil in our Daily Face Wash and Protective Shave Cream.

And here’s why….

What is Tea Tree Oil?

Derived from Melaleuca alternifolia (a native plant of Australia) Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil with strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Native Australians have used the oil for centuries as a medicine, inhaling the oil to treat coughs and applying it directly to the skin to accelerate healing.

Tea Tree Oil contains a number of compounds that kill many strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The major one of these compounds (terpinen-4-ol) also increases white blood cell activity, helping fight germs and other foreign invaders.

This all makes Tea Tree Oil an excellent natural remedy for the treatment of bacterial and fungal skin conditions, as well as preventing infection and helping skin to heal.

But what does this have to do with your daily skincare routine?...

The benefits to a man’s skin of Tea Tree Oil

Whilst the differences between a man’s skin and a woman’s skin are small, they do have a big impact on the best way to take care of your skin.

Tea Tree Oil helps control oily skin

Firstly a man's skin tends to be oilier than a woman’s.

Sebum is the natural oily substance produced by your skin’s sebaceous glands. It’s what keeps our skin and hair soft and healthy.

Oily skin occurs when these glands become over-active and produce too much sebum. This causes the classic signs of an oily skin - enlarged pores and shine!

If you have this skin type you’re not alone. It’s the most common skin type amongst men. Sebaceous glands are more numerous and more active in a man’s skin.

Male hormones tend to send the sebaceous glands into overdrive!

And it gets worse…

The excess sebum can combine with any dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, clogging your pores and leading to breakouts and acne.

Tea Tree Oil not only helps to regulate excess oil production, it also keeps skin free of acne-causing bacteria.

Purifying Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil

We include Tea Tree Oil in our Daily Face Wash to regulate sebum production, keeping oily skin under control, and helping your skin to stay looking matt.

This purifying face wash also helps to prevent any acne.

Tea Tree Oil is powerful at fighting acne

Acne appears when your pores become blocked with oil, dead skin cells or bacteria.

Breakouts occur when:

  • too much oil is produced by your sebaceous glands
  • dead skin cells accumulate and clog your pores
  • bacteria build up in your pores

When bacteria breed in a clogged pore and the oil is unable to escape, a whitehead pimple appears.

Tea Tree Oil’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties act as a natural remedy for acne - reducing both the amount of pimples and the severity of the acne.

In one study, Tea Tree Oil was found to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide, the most common anti-acne medication.

Along with anti-bacterial Tea Tree Oil, our Daily Face Wash contains an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (an AHA), Lactic Acid which exfoliates away dead skin cells and stops them from blocking pores and causing acne.

Our Daily Face Wash fights acne on three fronts!

  1. Regulating excess oil production
  2. Dissolving away dead skin cells
  3. Keeping your pores free of bacteria

Tea Tree Oil soothes freshly shaved skin

Shaving affects the quality of your skin making it more sensitive, destroying the hydrolipidic film and leading to a loss of natural protection.

The act of dragging a blade across your skin can cause irritation (razor burn) and nicks, leading to the creation of scar tissue.

Tea Tree Oil’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it extremely effective at soothing any irritation from shaving.

By reducing inflammation and increasing white blood cell activity, Tea Tree Oil calms razor burn, reduces any nicks and stops them from becoming infected.

Protective Shave Cream with Tea Tree Oil

Our Protective Shave Cream is based on moisturizing Glycerin and enriched with Shea Butter to nourish and protect your skin, along with Apricot Stone Oil to soften your beard for easier shaving.

We’ve also added Aloe Vera to soothe your skin.

And, of course, purifying Tea Tree Oil to help reduce any redness, razor burn or irritation.

This luxurious, nourishing formula leaves your skin beautifully smooth and hydrated following your shave.

Tea Tree Oil calms any redness

Men have a higher concentration of blood vessels which can lead to your skin looking redder.

With its anti-inflammatory benefits, Tea Tree Oil helps to relieve red or inflamed skin. Tea Tree Oil has been shown to reduce symptoms of contact dermatitis as well as provide relief from bug bite reactions by reducing the itching, redness and swelling that occurs.

So both our Daily Face Wash and our Protective Shave Cream reduce and calm any redness and inflammation.

And that's not all...

Other uses and benefits of Tea Tree Oil

Along with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, Tea Tree Oil also…

  • fights fungal and viral infections – like athlete’s foot, or cold sores
  • improves a dry scalp, and so reduces dandruff
  • heals minor cuts and scrapes. Tea Tree Oil kills the bacteria that causes infection in wounds. And by increasing the activity of white blood cells it reduces the time taken to heal.

Tea Tree Oil is used in natural health products to heal skin issues and treat skin infections. As well as to relieve congestion and respiratory tract infections.

Tea Tree Oil is also excellent when used to make homemade cleaning products that are free from dangerous chemicals. It effectively kills any bacteria or mold that’s growing in your home.

How to use Tea Tree Oil

Tree Tree Oil can be used in the following ways:

Applied to your skin topically

However, you don’t want to apply pure Tea Tree Oil directly to your skin as it can be very harsh and irritating. You should always dilute it with a carrier oil (like jojoba or sunflower oil)

Roughly one drop of pure Tea Tree Oil should be diluted with 3 drops of the carrier oil before applying the mixture to your skin.

Used Aromatically

To relieve congestion and respiratory tract infections you can use an oil diffuser to diffuse Tea Tree Oil throughout your home. You can also inhale the oil directly.

In skincare

Perhaps the easiest way for your skin to benefit from Tea Tree Oil every day is to opt for skincare products which include this hero ingredient.

The Tea Tree Oil in our products has been derived from the best sources so you can be assured that it's going to do an excellent job!

But it’s clear that Tea Tree Oil is both safe, effective and offers so many benefits to improve a man’s skin.

You can find Tea Tree Oil in our Daily Face Wash to reduce excess oil production, and to keep skin free of acne-causing bacteria.
